Best Time to Visit Hilton Head Island: A Renter's Month-by-Month Guide
The honest answer: there's no bad month on Hilton Head — but the island is four different vacations depending on when you go. Here's how the seasons actually break down, and when to book for beach weather, golf, or the best nightly rate.
Spring (March–May): the island's best-kept secret
April and May are the sweet spot — highs in the 70s and 80s, blooming azaleas, and the beach already swimmable by late April. April brings the RBC Heritage PGA Tour event to Harbour Town, which books up the whole island, so plan around it (or book very early). Early March can still be jacket weather; late May is warm and lively with summer still ahead.
Summer (June–August): peak beach season
Hot, humid, and built for swimming — highs in the high 80s with the warmest ocean water of the year. This is family-vacation prime time: nightly rates peak, oceanfront condos book out, and Shelter Cove runs summer fireworks and events. If summer is your window, book 6–12 months ahead.
Fall (September–October): the local favorite
Ask a Hilton Head local when they hit the beach and many will say October. The ocean stays warm from summer, humidity drops, crowds thin out after Labor Day, and nightly rates ease down from the summer peak. September can still be stormy; October is about as close to perfect beach weather as it gets.
Winter (November–February): quiet and a bargain
Winter on Hilton Head is genuinely mild — daytime highs often in the 50s and 60s — and it's the island's low season: the lowest nightly rates, empty beaches, and excellent golf conditions. Some restaurants run limited hours, but for a peaceful long weekend or a budget trip, it's hard to beat.
When to book
